Born and raised in rural East Devon, UK, Richard Cotton came to London at the age of 19 to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, under the incisive eye of the great Doreen Cannon and in awe of the unmatched encyclopaedic brain of Lloyd Trott, amongst many other inspirational teachers. For a while after graduating Richard wished that he had spent more time listening and less time partying. He no longer feels this, but instead sees his time at RADA, perhaps optimistically, as a period of osmosis, where the seeds of learning bear fruit only later and in increments.

Richard's work in Television includes The Office, Foyle's War and Murphy's Law; big screen excursions include Love Actually and The Libertine; Richard has also found himself immersed in the British independent Horror scene, most recently playing the protagonist Graham in Midnight Peepshow (dir. Jake West, Ludovica Musumeci, Anthony Hayles, Andy Edwards), with more on the horizon.

Richard has performed on stage, with some of the UK's major touring companies (ETT Macbeth, Oxford Stage Co. Great Expectations), and in many of the great regional theatres (Tom in The Glass Menagerie and Happy in Death of Salesman both at the Library Theatre Manchester; the title role in Oedipus and Orsino in Twelfth Night at the Northcott Theatre Exeter); Richard performed at the National Theatre in Phyllida Lloyd's Pericles, for the RSC/Edinburgh International Festival in Peter Stein's Troilus and Cressida, Antonio in Twelfth Night at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre and as Captain Blick in the West End musical Imagine This. He was part of Howard Barker's acclaimed company The Wrestling School, playing Guardaloop in I Saw Myself and Euripides in Dogdeath in Macedonia, both by Barker.

Informal requests for voiceover and acting help became so frequent that, some 10 years ago, Richard began formalising his one-to-one coaching. Through word of mouth alone, these coaching sessions have become so successful that, in 2023, Richard consolidated his teaching into a no-nonsense online voiceover training course, The Voice Over Primer, for beginners just getting started, through to seasoned professionals looking to hone their existing skills.
